Concrete supply for the permanent slipway commenced in April with Leith’s supplying a C40/50 underwater concrete with macro synthetic fibres and using an underwater concrete stabiliser. The concrete was placed at a depth of 4m and was pumped to the formwork at the end of the slipway where precast units had been positioned. Once the C40/50 was placed a 10mm, Self Compacting Concrete was used to fill all voids between and under the precast units.
Because of the complexity, placing the concrete was a slow process with it taking 1.5-2hrs per load. The concrete was placed by a team of 4 divers who had cameras fixed to their diving equipment so that the concrete pours could be monitored from a control room with instructions given on placing to the divers via radio.
Highland Council has 2 resident Engineers on site and all concrete pours were monitored very closely. Leith’s Technical Technician attended site checking and reporting workability and taking cubes.
