Over the years Kishorn have facilitated major oil manufacturing and fabrication projects which include the famous Ninian Central Platform, which is still operating to this day. This was by far the largest project undertaken at the site and necessitated the construction of one of Europe’s largest Dry Docks, which is a 160 metre diameter. By 1977 there were over 3,000 people working on this project at Kishorn Port & Dry Dock.

Ninian Central Platform towed from Kishorn to final location; five tugs towing forwards with two towing backwards for stability

Upon completion, the 600,000 tonne concrete platform was towed by seven tugs to its current North Sea location. At that time this was the largest man-made object ever to be moved across the surface of the Earth. Other notable projects at Kishorn Port & Dry Dock over the years include:  BP’s Buchan Alpha, Maureen Field Platform, the Morecambe steel DP-4 sub-structure (jacket) and the construction of two caissons to support the span of the Skye Bridge and more recently ground breaking trials by the wave energy company, Albatern.

With full planning permission in place at Kishorn Port & Dry Dock, we can now consider further opportunities that may arise in oil and gas, fabrication, decommissioning and the renewable energy sectors. Having planning permission already established is a tremendous opportunity for potential developers who are after a “shovel ready” site.
