Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme

Leiths Scotland

Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme, at £86m, is Scotland’s largest flood scheme and forms part of the larger Moray Flood Alleviation Scheme.

Leith’s involvement in the larger scheme began in 2007 and has seen the company supply many thousands of tonnes of high specification rock from our New Forres and Bluehill Quarries to completed schemes at Lhanbryde, Forres and Rothes.

Shortly after the Elgin Scheme was given the go ahead in December 2010, the Consultant Engineers, Royal Haskoning, and Contractor, Morrison Construction, visited Bluehill Quarry in early 2011 to view various supply options to choose the most suitable stone to form the flood relief channels.

The flood relief channels are situated alongside the critical flood area of the Elgin scheme and are also highly visible in sensitive areas such as the environs of Elgin Cathedral, so aesthetic as well as engineering considerations had to be made. The solution was to supply a Type 6G Weighted Toe Stone which was large enough to remain in situ during flood conditions but was also of the correct dimensions to be readily formed into an attractive channel. We are currently halfway through the initial supply requirement of 23,000t and the Client has expressed delight at the product and the impressive completed channels.

As part of the same project, Leiths are supplying Drainage Layer Stone to raise the level of the Deanshaugh playing Fields and are due to complete supply of 50,000t of New Forres Quarry stone in the next few weeks, having supplied the site at an impressive rate of 1,200 tonnes per day.
